Before you go up the lakes, there is a shop where you should stop. It is the Longford Fishing Tackle shop called Doo-Gun. Yes, it is on the main street, where else would it be? Yes it is open 7 days a week during the fishing season, what do you expect, service? Well, you get it here without a doubt. Allan & Sue Davey are there to give you not only the ‘good oil’ on where they’re biting, but also sell you a fishing licence, waders, shoes and jackets and hats, even maps, so you not only find your way into the highlands, but also back. Doo-Gun has all sorts of equipment which you have too, but left at home and if Allan hasn’t got it, you don’t need it. Allan has been trout fishing since he was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper. His father in Law taught him to fly fish – but that’s another story for a winter evening, when the trout doing ‘their thing’ and we’re all dreaming of opening weekend. Allan was a full time trout guide for 5 years and knows what is biting, where, when on what. The flies Allan sells in his shop are the ones that he himself ties and fishes with when he has time. They are designed to catch the fish, not the fly-fisher. But if you want expensive ‘Celebrity’ flies, he has them too. Sue was telling me that a lot of visitors stop buy on the way home asking what fly they should have used and where they should have gone? Don’t make that mistake, drop in on the way up the lakes and ask what flies you should use and where you should go. You might still not catch any fish, but you don’t have to blame it on the flies Allan sold you. And if they don’t bite, and nothing works, relax, read the book “The Trout Whisperer” and be a better fly-fisher for it. Oh by the way, Allan sells my book too!
